Charlie’s First Talent Show

Charlotte had a talent show at school on Monday and lucky for her, her asshole parents signed her up to play the nose harmonica and ukulele.

If you’re not familiar with my daughter’s adorable talent, here it is:

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this, butCharlotte is really timid in new situations. Let’s just say that the talent show was no different.

Charlotte’s name was called and Mark carried Charlotte to the stage. She then proceeded to sit and stare at the audience as they sang twinkle twinkle little star (which was supposed to be accompanied by her ukulele and harmonica playing).

Despite the fact that she didn’t actually perform, I was really proud of her for getting up in front of everyone and staying put for the entire song.

After her “performance,” the entire school was invited on-stage for a song and dance. Charlie joined…

After the performance, our tot enjoyed a delicious fruit snack.

Adjusting

We’ve survived the first 11 days! And honestly, it’s been going really well. There have been moments where the exhaustion sets in, but really, it’s been going well!

Mark just went back to work today, so we’ll see what tune I’m humming come Friday… But for now, things are going well.

Charlotte is still LOVING her brother (aka “my baby”). She loves to hold him and give him hugs and kisses. She’s been a great helper and is even making improvements in terms of being more gentle. Progress!

As for Henry… The boy loves his milk. LOVES his milk. He sleeps 2.5-3.5ish hours at a time during the night, which isn’t too bad! I think I get up 2-3 times per night? Maybe more? Honestly, I have no idea. I try to pay attention, but never seem to remember. I haven’t been tracking his nursing, which I think is part of it. But whatever it is, it doesn’t feel too bad. Although, tonight, he’s literally been nursing nonstop. Maybe he’ll sleep a longer stretch? Haha I’m not getting my hopes up.

He also has reflux. Poor cookie. He’ll howl out cries when his tummy hurts. Mostly it affects him at night. I’ve been trying to nurse him in an upright position and then hold him upright for 10-30 minutes after.

Regardless, he’s a super chill little man. Such a lovey. Also, he has the softest head and is just a total sweetie pie.

Anyway, here are some photos from the past week or so…

Fun at home…

Our little ice cream outing

“This is 31…”

“This is 31…” That was the theme of this year’s birthday celebration. Don’t worry… I’m not being a negative nelly. It was said (many times) in laughter (and sometimes maybe with tears).

Unfortunately, Miss Charlotte has been sick for the past week. We were supposed to have a kid-free day/evening on Saturday to celebrate my 31st, but things changed. Because C was sick and didn’t end up napping on Saturday, we ended up picking her up around 6:15 on Saturday night so we could get her in bed at home.

Despite not being a very sexy birthday celebration (I mean, what was I expecting at 39+ weeks pregnant), I really did have a great time.

After Charlotte tortured us on Saturday morning with her evil “I’m sick” antics, we brought her over to my parents’ house. We had a delish lunch (from my favorite restaurant) WITH an ice cream cake and then headed out to go see Money Monster. The movie was great, the popcorn was tasty and it was just nice to get out.

When we got out of the movie, we went to my new obsession, Tochi Ramen, for takeout. We picked up the yummiest of ramen, picked up Charlotte from my parents’ house, put the crankster to bed and then enjoyed. It wasn’t a fancy dinner, but it was great. We curled up on the couch, ate excessively, and watched iZombie (currently my favorite show).

The next morning, we were ZOO BOUND! Now, anyone who knows us knows that my husband is Mr. Anti Zoo. Luckily for me, he was feeling guilty for his lame lack of “special” on Mother’s Day, so he bit the bullet and took us to the zoo (something I’ve been asking for forever). Despite Charlotte still being decently under the weather, we had a blast! We saw the monkeys and the elephants! We fed goats and got to ride on the train.

All in all, it was a blast!

Then, during C’s nap, Mark and I relaxed, packed our hospital bag and enjoyed our Sunday. Dinner was nice and low-key at home.

And now, here I am… nearly 40 weeks pregnant with my second baby… 31 years old… feeling good and feeling grateful.

The Tiny Tot Loves Her Baseball

This weekend, we took C to her first baseball game. These two short videos pretty much sum up her love and excitement for the game…

I was really proud… She “did baseball” perfectly. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, she was eating! Grandma brought her some Annie’s shells and cheese (she took down at least half a box), then she ate a full peach, and apple slices. After that, she got a free fudge bar from the stadium (kid’s day!).

She lasted 5.5 innings, which amounted to nearly 3 hours! And really, to say she “lasted” isn’t fair… She enjoyed 5.5 innings.

When we got home (at 430 – yikes!), we put her directly in bed, where she proceeded to pass out until we woke her around 615. The girl was tired and worn out, but all in all, it was a great day.

She loved the fireworks and would literally hand us her food so she could clap. She got so excited every time the crowd roared. It was great!

21 Months of Lovely

Somehow I never got around to posting C’s 20 month update and now she’s 21 months old! I cannot believe our baby is now considered, “almost 2.” When did that happen? Once they turn 2, do you officially stop counting months and they just become “2”???? Oy.

The past two months have been filled with increased skills and SO MUCH PERSONALITY. Charlotte is most definitely her own person and has such character. She absolutely LOVES to laugh. She’s sweet and loving, but also spirited and goofy. She adores babies. That feels understated. She has a severe obsession with babies (can’t wait to see how that translates when new baby moves in for good). She really enjoys coloring… especially with markers.

Being outside and everything nature just tickles the girl. She literally screams with glee when she sees a bird. She loves to take walks (she walks and holds our hand). She gets a huge kick out of carrying or pushing things that are bigger than her.

She LOVES music. She loves to sing and dance and play (piano, harmonica… with her nose, etc), and listen.

New Words: Charlotte’s vocabulary continues to grow and she now strings together 2- and 3-word sentences. I’m constantly surprised. Here’s a list of what I can remember; although, I’m sure I’m missing many.

  • Daddy, Dada
  • Nana or NANNY!
  • Daby, Taby (Toby)

  • She’s actually making great progress in the quality of her teeth brushing
  • She loves balloons
  • She can jump
  • She loves the piano
  • Charlotte is really well behaved. I mean, don’t get me wrong… she definitely has her toddler moments, but she’s a really great kid. She does a lot of testing, but is generally responsive to our feedback and/or discipline. She’s so easy going and SUCH a joy to be around. She brings happiness and light and love and laughter into every day.

Favorites

Book: Corduroy (the girl loves anything teddy)

Toy: Still Teddy & Baby (both of her babies)… and probably her stroller.

Food: Berries, Cheese… hmm. Milk? She’s definitely gotten way better with food, but these are her faves.

Size

Clothes: In the process of transitioning to 24 months / 2T – they’re definitely a bit big, but her 18 month stuff is getting small

Diapers: 5

Shoes: Moving onto Size 5

Daily Schedule: Ugh! Lately her schedule has been totally off. I feel like she’s been going through a developmental growth spurt, but who knows. She literally gets in bed around 7 and for the past couple weeks, will stay up playing in her crib until 9 or later! It’s so frustrating.

  • 7/7:30: Depending on when she goes to sleep (although today she slept until 9:50 a)
  • 8/830: Breakfast
  • 10: On non-school days, Charlotte has some milk and “quiet time” with Nana, then a snack. On school days, snack time.
  • 12: Lunch
  • 1/2: Depending on her mood, Charlotte’s afternoon nap falls somewhere between 1 and 145. She will typically sleep anywhere between 2-3.5 hours. Usually it’s around 2.5..
  • 5/530: Dinner, Bath (on bath days – she bathes every other day and on swim days)
  • 7: Charlotte goes to bed most often around 7/730 (lately, she falls asleep anywhere between 830 and 10)… oy.

Schedule: Charlotte goes to school from 9-12:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (on these days, she eats a snack and lunch at school and does not nap in the morning). Charlie is with Nana (at our house) on Monday morning, Wednesday all day, Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon.

The Aquarium!

This past weekend we went to the aquarium with my brother and his new gf. They live in Chicago, about 2 hours from us.

So, we got up early on Sunday, waited for C to wake up and the hauled ass to leave the house as early as possible.

We got on our way at around 830, for a 1030 arrival in Chicago.

The aquarium was great! Charlotte has never been to the zoo… I know… Insert <gasp>! The husband is anti zoo. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there… We will make it to the zoo.

With our lack of animal exposure, we were pretty pumped to see all the fish! And honestly, it was great! Charlotte was definitely a bit overwhelmed at times (she preferred stroller time for the first two hours), but loved pointing out the fish and other animals.

All in all, we spent about 4-5 hours trekking around the aquarium and saw all sorts of fish and even got to see beluga whales, dolphins, penguins and otters! Plus, as a bonus, my brother’s gf was great and it was so nice to see him!

With that said, the ride home after no nap all day was not so fun. Charlotte slept for about 20 minutes, but woke up when we stopped for my husband to get a coffee (I think he’s learned the importance of stopping before we get on the highway). Post 20 minute kitty nap, Charlotte cried at hyperventilating levels on and off for the remainder until I finally moved to the back seat.

It was lovely.

To say I was tired when we got home would be an understatement. 5 hours on my feet (many of which I was lugging a toddler) + 4 hours in the car (many with a crying toddler) + 34 weeks pregnant = bad. Just bad.

Today is Wednesday and I’m still not fully recovered.

But look how much fun we had…

Weekend in Review

I’ve been terrible about keeping up with this blog, as the days and weeks are literally flying by. Regardless, here’s my little weekend in review…

We had a great (and busy) weekend. On Friday after work, we had dinner with my closest little love, Marci, her hubs and babes, her parents and one of Charlie’s classmates and his family. I cannot rave enough about how fun this was.

First, I absolutely adore every minute I have to catch up with Marci and smoosh her ADORABLE little guy. And second, it was a lot of fun to chitter chatter with the other family. I actually went to middle and high school with the dad, so it was just great to catch up.

Funny story… it was around 8:45pm and C was turning into a wild woman. Definitely still behaved, but hyper… my mom would refer to her mood as “punchy.”

Anyway, the dad, Dave, was laying on the ground next to his 7 or 8 month old baby (who C was OBSESSED with) and Mark was laying on a spot on the floor across the room. In C’s wild, happy oblivion, she climbed up on top of Dave and gave him loving, happy pats as she said “Dada.” At first I responded with, “Yes, that’s Eli and Ari’s dada.”

Then, as the others in the room started making comments like, “Wow! Do you believe this kid? Look how comfortable she is… etc.” I started to think, “Well, no… I don’t believe this actually.”

Me: Charlie, you know that’s not Daddy, right? Look at his face. That’s Ari’s Daddy…

Charlotte: (Starts backing off slowly as she looks at his face and realizes that she is not sitting on top of her own daddy.)

As soon as she realized her little mistake, she booked it to Daddy’s arms while I proceeded to cry from laughing so hard.

On Saturday, we went to gymnastics class, which was fun. I haven’t gone in a bit, so it was nice to see how much she’s progressed. Of course, the day I join, Charlotte takes a tumble off of a 3 foot high mat. Thankfully, she really is the toughest little girl ever.

We looked at her in shock and said, “Are you okay”… she thought about it for a few seconds and said, “yeahhh.”

After gymnastics, we decided to head over to a local farm that welcomes guests. Unfortunately, they were closed for winter; however, the gentleman allowed us to come check out the few animals they had at this location… one chubby bunny, a ton of the LOUDEST, squakiest ducks and 3 pigeons.

Regardless, it was enough to entertain C. In fact, she’s been making duck noises nonstop ever since.

Before C’s nap, we were also able to get her little art station hung up in her room. I LOVE how it turned out! Now, I just need to finish her table and chairs.

That evening, we went to my sweet Carrie’s son’s 2nd birthday party! It was a farm theme and absolutely adorable! Charlie loved it! She played with balloons and toy animals, ate applesauce, cake and berries and got to be with mom and dad. What could be bad?

On Sunday, we went to Home Depot and Whole Foods in the morning. HD gave away little plastic easter eggs with wrapped chocolate bunnies inside. We’ve never given C chocolate, so we just let her play with the candies assuming she didn’t know what they were. Sure enough, when we looked down at her, she was silently indulging in some chocolate. We let her take one more bite and then called it quits on the chocolate.

After our errands, we went to my parents’ house for brunch and some playtime. Then, post-nap, Mark’s Dad and Step Mom came over for a pizza dinner.

All in all, it was a great weekend!

DIY Glitter Sensory Bottles

IMG_9527

With Charlotte in school this year, I thought it was the perfect time to make DIY Glitter Sensory Bottles as Valentines for her class. My intention was to have us do the project together.

Yes, I thought a project that involves glitter glue, GLITTER (excessive amounts), hot water and a hot glue gun would be a great activity for my toddler and I to complete together. I was wrong. In fact, Charlotte’s only real participation was shaking a few of the bottles up for mommy.

So I did what any improvising Momma would do… I put Charlotte to bed and binge watched TV while I finished making TWELVE glitter sensory bottles.

Instructions to Make ONE Bottle

Materials (there is a bit of a trial and error that needs to go into this, but here’s what worked for me):

  • Plastic Bottles (I used 11.5 oz Fiji water bottles because they’re cute and small and sturdy – NOTE, I didn’t want to waste the water, so I drank about 80 ounces in one night and then saved the rest. I had to pee fiercly all night.)
  • Glitter glue (1/3-1/2 a X ounce bottle)
  • Extra fine glitter (I bought an X ounce bottle and could have literally used it for all 12 bottles. You really only need about a teaspoon… in my opinion.)
  • Hot Water
  • Glue Gun
  • Tiny Figurine (I added one tiny animal figurine per bottle because I thought it’d be cute. My toddler and her friends confirmed. The figurine is a fun addition.)
  • Essential Oil (optional – I used lemon)

Instructions:

  1. Consume water from water bottle.
  2. Peel off the label from the water bottle. This was a HUGE pain in the ass for me. I tried using this Goop Off Soap, soaking in HOT water, a scrubber sponge, vegetable oil, prayer… nothing was working. So, I Googled ways to get label adhesive off of a plastic bottle and found the most effective solution. Simply put a couple drops of essential oil on a paper towel and rub the adhesive off. It was SO much easier and so much faster. Just make sure to use a child-safe essential oil.
  3. Put the glitter glue into the bottle. Then, fill the water bottle to about 2/3 – 3/4 full with HOT tap water. Add the glitter.
  4. Cap it and shake, shake, shake.
  5. At this point, you may need to add glitter or glue (the glitter glue will help slow down the flow) depending on how your bottle is shaking.
  6. Note that at this point, my bottle filled with bubbles. So once I perfected my glitter to glue to water ratio, I waited for the glitter to settle at the bottom and squeezed all the bubbles out.
  7. Then, I filled my bottle up with hot water the rest of the way. Leave enough room to shake the bottle, but honestly, you can go pretty high. My water line was at the little plastic seal from the cap.
  8. Add your figurine, cap it and shake again.
  9. Once you’re in love with your bottle, put some hot glue on the inside of the cap and twist the cap back onto the bottle. Voila! You’re done!

Tips:

  • At first, my glitter was totally sticking to the sides of the bottle and just not working. Turns out I had used too much glitter and too much glue. I simply poured my mixture out into a paper cup and then added a fraction of the mixture back into my bottle and added hot tap water until my ratio made sense.
  • Make sure to glue the cap onto the bottle. Otherwise, babe might unscrew the top and either a) make a huge mess or b) drink glitter. Both are terrible.

Toddler-Made DIY Gift Tags

IMG_9523

One element that Charlotte helped with was the little gift tags used on each of the bottles.

  1. Facilitate child painting or drawing on cardstock (we used cardstock that was finger… well, hand-painted a few days before)
  2. Use your favorite paper punch (I bought the cutest dang heart punch ever on Amazon. I’m obsessed.) to cut out shapes from the best areas of the artwork.
  3. Write your note!

Our Big 18 Month Old!

Our babe is an entire year and a half! People told me that once she hit 18 months, there’s a huge developmental leap, and it’s true! She’s such a big little person these days. She is full of personality and just such a wonderful little love.

Walking Update: This should really say “running update”… the child is OFF! She’s constantly walking/running everywhere. One interesting little tid bit is that she walks on her tip toes quite a bit. As a 5′ 1″ (and that 1” might be a bit of a stretch) little lady, I spend a lot of time standing on my tip toes. It’s a habit. So I don’t know if she’s seen me doing it or if it’s a toddler thing, but it’s pretty silly. And sometimes leads to her falling on her tush.

Talking Update: The child is a chatterbox. I forsee many a report card comment about spending too much time chattering and socializing in class (just like her mommy received). Her comprehension is amazing. We can give her 1 and 2-part instructions and she goes right ahead and does it. Sometimes she shocks me with the words she knows. The best way I’ve found for teaching her words is through books. We go through picture books and identify the images.

I say, “Where’s the lion” and she points to it. Then, “What does the lion say?” And in the most feminine, high pitch voice, she squeals, “Raaaa!” She can do this with tons of animals (monkey, bear, giraffe, dog, cat, frog, fish, lion, pig, etc) and other objects (baby, milk, pine cone, tree, cup, ball, and the list goes on).

In terms of words she says, her vocabulary is a bit more limited, but still impressive (to me!):

  • Mom, Momma
  • Dad, Dada (she used to call Mark “MA” so this is a welcomed new lesson)
  • Baba (baby)
  • All Done (she said this today and it was clear as day)
  • Mosht (toast)
  • Chssss (Cheese)
  • Ornch (Orange)
  • Hot, Hot, Hot (this is Charlie’s favorite word that she uses nonstop. She touches EVERYTHING and anything remotely warm makes her say “hot” for 20 minutes)
  • Pom (Pom Poms – I have little tissue paper flower pom poms hanging in my office)
  • Mor (More)
  • Ba (Bear)
  • Liii (Lion)
  • Sssssss (Steffie – my cousin)

I’m sure there are more because I’m literally shocked daily, but it’s so hard to remember all of them.

New Tricks:

  • She is a wizard with a fork and spoon!
  • She can do “downward facing dog” and is working on a somersault

  • She blows bubbles in the pool. AND, even crazier, she graduated to Level “Baby 2” in swim class and now goes in the pool without Mark. She has 2 others in her class with her and she sits on the pool step (in the water) by herself while the teacher takes the other kids for their turn. This to me is mind blowing. SUCH a big girl.
  • She can point out every part of her body.
  • She loves to play dress up with Mommy’s hats and of course, look in the mirror or at pictures of herself in her “costumes”

  • She “counts”… aka points at objects and makes a noise to imitate counting.
  • She can play the harmonica… with her nose.

  • She’s the toughest “tough girl”
  • She can take her shoes and socks off on her own.
  • She loves to take care of her “baby” (her baby doll). She gets baby all wrapped in her swaddle (and by gets I mean that she demands that Nana, Dada or I wrap her up) and carries her EVERYWHERE, rocks her, pushes her in the stroller and/or grocery cart, and gives her tons of smooches.
  • She loves her puppy and kitty. I actually haven’t noticed her pulling the cat’s tail recently… so hopefully she’s going to stop that. She’s very sweet with Toby. Gives him hugs and pets.
  • She helps unload the dishwasher (sometimes even when we don’t want her to)
  • She throws away trash (and picks up any and every little speck of dust that comes in her path) and closes the trash cabinet door after.
  • She can wipe her own hands, face and nose (not perfectly, but pretty well) and cleans up spills with paper towel.
  • She knows the hand signals for “wheels on the bus,” “no more monkeys jumping on the bed”, “Take me out to the ball game,” “Patty Cake,” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”… hmmm… I’m sure there are more.
  • She’s obsessed with music. LOVES, LOVES, LOVES music.
  • She pretends everything is a phone and puts it to her little ear for a chat. She also LOVES to “work” at mommy’s desk.
  • She’s a hilarious dancer.
  • She LOVES to brush her teeth. In fact, sometimes she refuses to drink her milk because she just can’t wait to brush her teeth.

Daily Schedule:

  • 7/8:30: Depending on when she goes to sleep and what her plans for the day are, she wakes up between 7 and 8:30 (she has slept as late as 10:30/11ish before) – the girl LOVES her sleep.
  • 8/830: Breakfast
  • 10: On non-school days, Charlotte takes a morning rest/nap. Sometimes she falls asleep, sometimes she just has quiet play in bed. Regardless, we typically only let her sleep 30-60 minutes in the morning. On non-school days, Charlotte skips this nap and comes home zonked.
  • 12: Lunch
  • 1/2: Depending on her mood, Charlotte’s afternoon nap falls somewhere between 1 and 2/230. She will typically sleep anywhere between 2-3.5 hours. Usually it’s around 2.5. Again, this depends on whether she took an AM nap, what she did all day, etc.
  • 6: Dinner, Bath (on bath days – she bathes every other day and on swim days)
  • 7/8: Charlotte goes to bed most often around 7:30/7:45ish

School Schedule: Charlotte goes to school from 9-12:30 on Thursdays and Fridays (on these days, she eats a snack and lunch at school and does not nap)

Favorite Foods: Mealtimes are kind of my least favorite lately. Although, the past few days, Charlotte has been pretty good. But she’s SO toddler when it comes to food. Some days she loves something, others she hates it. Some days she refuses to taste anything, some days she’s adventurous. Some days she eats three huge meals, other days she fizzles after breakfast. The gist is that it’s not always easy. In fact, the only meal that’s “easy” is breakfast… ever.

favorites

  • Cheerios or pretty much any other cereal
  • Oatmeal with cinnamon
  • Quiche
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Oranges
  • Crackers (she rarely gets these)
  • Yogurt

  • Diapers: Size 4
  • Shoe Size: Toddler 4.5

Teeth: Charlotte has so many teeth. I want to say she has 16… although I haven’t gotten a look to see if her 2 year old molars are making their way

Weekend Review (& the First Night of Chanukah)!

We had another busy, busy weekend! On Friday, I met my mother and sister for a manicure (what’s better???).

I painted my nails “dutch tulips”… a nice Christmasy red for Chanukah 🙂

I even made it back in time to play with my little bumpkins and put her to bed.

On Saturday, Charlotte had her very first gymnastics class! My little babes is growing up so fast. I can’t believe all of these new activities and experiences she’s been having.

Charlotte was a bit overwhelmed at class, but after getting some good bouncing in on the trampoline, she lightened up (her grip… she was a clingy koala for most of class). And of course, in her sudden, post-jump excitement, she started running towards all the people and stepped right off of the mats and faceplanted on the only foot of hard surface in the dang place.

After gymnastics, I headed out for brunch with my girlfriends to celebrate one of my sweet girlfriend’s birthday! It was delicious and a blast.

Then, we made our way back to the gymnastics place for open gym. Round two was really great for Charlotte. She had an absolute blast.

That evening, my friend Jenna and her two boys came over for a visit. Mark took all three kids to the basement playroom and gave Jenna and I a good hour or more to chat and catch up. It was perfect.

Then on Sunday, we headed to the nursing home to wish Mark’s grandmother a happy 97th birthday! Charlotte was a bit overwhelmed by the home. She wasn’t super comfortable, but did manage to give Grandma Dina a couple birthday smooches.

Finally, after Charlotte’s nap, it was time to go to Grammy & Grampie’s for the first night of Chanukah. And let me just say, Charlotte had a blast. We didn’t have a booster seat, so we sat her on top of a couple medical books and strapped her in with a belt. It worked perfectly and she loved sitting at the table like a big girl.

When it came time for presents, Charlotte absolutley LOVED opening her gifts and found a ridiculous amount of joy lugging around the gift bag containing all of her new items. In fact, she hasn’t stopped lugging around said gift bag.

It was a blast! All in all, a very fun and eventful weekend.
