The Baby Hem is THREE

Henry is officially three years and three days old. How has this happened? My baby’s feet are slimming down and starting to smell, his hands have lost their pudge, he is pretty much a grown adult. The gist? Time is flying and my baby is getting old.

Despite my internal tears being shed for the manner in which time is just flying by, this birthday has been so exciting. For about a month before Henry’s birthday, he started really getting excited. Asking at bedtime, “when I wake up from this nap, will it be my birthday?” and waking every morning asking, “is today my birthday??” The anticipation was really building.

In pure Melissa/Mark fashion, the night before Henry’s birthday consisted of a ridiculous amount of toy building and house decorating. We ran around like crazy people making sure everything was perfectly placed to give Henry a great birthday surprise when he woke up.

I set my alarm for 615am in hopes of waking up before Henry so I could see his reaction. However, the bugger beat me. At around 6, I heard his tiny voice, “Charlotte, look!!!!!”

I popped up and ran to catch Henry discovering each Thomas the Train decoration, piece by piece. Then the balloons and his GIANT, tablecloth-covered gift.

He was overwhelmed with excitement!

The kiddos played for the next couple hours while I got everything ready for our birthday breakfast. Our favorite little friends (neighbors) were coming over to enjoy a celebratory breakfast and some playtime.

After breakfast, our friends went home and we hopped in the car to go downtown to ride the new streetcar (which we called the train for excitement purposes). We took the “train” to the public market and ate a yummy lunch and ice cream outside, then took the streetcar back to our car. It was a great little adventure!

Then, nap time and a movie night picnic back at the house. We set up the projector and watched about an hour of cars before the tiny tots got bored and we moved on to playing with Henry’s new toys.

All in all, the celebration was great! We had such a happy day. These are the days I want to bottle up and keep perfectly preserved forever.

And, in terms of a Henry update, here are the facts…

Height: 3′ 1″ (39th percentile)

Weight: 33 lbs (65th percentile)

Random tid bits:

  • Henry can count to 6 in Spanish (10 with assistance – he has a hard time remembering 7 and 10)
  • He can spell his name and knows his birthday
  • Henry is incredibly verbal. He speaks just as fluently as his sister, so I won’t bore you with the bazillion words and phrases he has.
  • Henry is VERY clumsy and falls often.
  • Henry continues to be the snuggliest little dude ever. He is always there for a hug and/or smooch. This morning he randomly told me that “huggies are like snuggles”… true.
  • Henry has very dry warm hands. Holding his hand fills my little heart.
  • When Henry melts down crying, he often times will say – through heavy sobs – “MAAAMMMMY, I NEED A HUGGY.” Shweetie snuggler.
  • Henry is a pretty big manipulator. When he does something naughty and I kneel down to tell him that he cannot do said thing, he cups my face with his warm paws and says, “I’m sorry, mommy. I won’t do it again.” Then, mommy buys Henry a pony.
  • Henry has been in a pinching/pretend biting phase with Charlotte. Never too hard, but enough to piss her off. Thankfully he’s still perfect.
  • Henry says Charlotte with a hard “CH” sound and refers to her as, “My CHarlotte”
  • Henry still naps every day
  • Henry LOVES music and sings a lot.
  • H has serious passion for baseball and sports in general.
  • Henry often times wears his pants, underwear and shirt backwards.
  • When Henry rides his tricycle, he reminds me of the intro to the show Bobby’s World.
  • Henry insists on sleeping with his door open. Typically with his arms above his head. He’s a light sleeper, so I tend to sneak in for smooches before I go to bed.
  • Henry LOVES hard boiled eggs (which he calls hard oiled eggs) and avocado (which he calls “adocado”). He eats like a TANK. It is not uncommon for him to eat multiple bowls of cereal/oatmeal, 1-2 hard boiled eggs, turkey and fruit… ALL of that at one breakfast.
  • Henry sometimes sneaks in Charlotte’s room at night because he doesn’t like to be alone.
  • Henry always falls asleep gripping some toy… a car, a train, a ring, etc.
  • Henry picks out his own clothes and gets dressed by himself every morning. He also puts his shoes on and packs up/unpacks his backpack daily.
  • Henry loves trucks and dinosaurs.
  • Henry’s little mouth reminds me of my Grandpa Henry.
  • Up until about 2 weeks ago, we had Henry on a strict no dairy/no soy/no sunflower oil/no coconut diet to try to help with his chronic loose poops. It stopped helping, so we’ve since lifted the food restrictions. H is now living his best life.
  • Henry has a very captivating quality about him. People tend to fall in love with him instantaneously upon meeting him. He has a loud, squeaky voice and speaks very well for his age, which tends to catch the attention of strangers.
  • Henry is a boy to love. He is very kind-hearted and the sweetest little guy I’ve ever met. He’s also incredibly bright and perceptive. As a completely unbiased source, you know these things are 100% true.
  • Henry is happy.
  • Henry smiles with every inch of his body.
  • I love my baby.
  • Henry looks up to his sister and loves going to the same school as her. Their teachers tell me that they often play together at school… mostly H with C’s friends. They frequently walk around the playground holding hands or with C’s arms around him. Despite his little pinchy/biting phase, they are the best of buds.
  • Henry wakes Charlotte up almost every morning. He goes into her room, wakes her and then they play together until their kiddie alarm clock turns green, signaling that they can come out of their rooms.
  • At dinner time, Henry rates my meals with a thumbs up, down or sideways.

Hemy Hem Starts School!

Apparently in January I wrote the title to this post, but never posted anything! Henry started school on January 23, 2018. He started going 3 mornings a week (8-1230), then we added a fourth day and as of yesterday, he’s going 5 mornings a week.

He’s doing great and has a little crew that consists of his friends Howie, Michael, Theo and Rosie. Unfortunately, Rosie is going to a different school now. Since Hem just moved from the toddler room to the 2k room, I’m sure his crew will grow and change in the coming weeks.

Buddy Turns 2!

20180602_095054My little baby is officially two years (and two days) old today. Although, if you ask him, 9 times out of 10, he’ll tell you he’s turning 4 (with a little smirk on his face). He will also tell you that his nearly 4 year old sister is turning 2.

I have SO much to say about my Henry. This boy talks NON-STOP. And not just babbles… but 6-7+ word sentences. He is a legit parrot. He loves to listen to a story or instructions and repeat them back. He’s the loviest love ever. Snuggles and hugs and kisses. He is empathetic. He is kind. He is polite (please, thank you, bless you, etc).

He’s also a bruiser.

20180602_095414-ANIMATION.gif

He loves to stick out his bottom lip and pout. He enjoys getting in trouble (help me!!)… sometimes he will put himself on a “break” – aka a timeout in his room. He will fake cry and then start cracking up.

He loves to play with his sister and often demands that she holds his hand in the car. He is somehow still nursing 1-2 times a day (I swore that I’d cut him off at 2… 2 days past and I’m not sure what the plan will be).

20180519_082928.jpg

Hem has his checkup this week, so I will post his stats, but here are a bunch of general updates.

  • Nicknames: Hem, Hem Hem, Hemy, Buddy, Moosh, Booshy
  • Words: This boy can literally say everything. I repeat, PARROT. He can count to 11. He sings his ABC’s… not perfectly… but SO well, relatively speaking.
  • Henry loves water. He will splash the shit out of anyone who comes near the bathtub. He just loves it.
  • Henry thoroughly enjoys watching baseball. He is always asking Grandpa Jeff to “watch baseball team for 2 minutes.”
  • He loves throwing balls “so high”… he walks around throwing balls hollering, “mommy, watch this!” “daddy, watch this!” etc…
  • Henry really enjoys reading books. He could literally read for hours. His current favorites are the Noisy Trucks Book, Dear Zoo, the Very Hungry Catepillar, and honestly, whatever else he can get his hands on. He went through a Goodnight Moon phase, but we haven’t read it in awhile. I need to pull that one back out.
  • His favorite movies/shows are Thomas the Train, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure and Moana. Yes, I did not stick to the no TV until you’re 2 thing as I did with Charlotte. Their personalities are so different. He doesn’t get as sucked into the TV as she does, but that could always change.
  • Henry LOVES fire trucks and biiiiiiig trucks and construction equipment and airplanes and pretty much anything that goes.
  • We bought Hem some balloons for his bday and he calls them his moons.
    20180602_095213.jpg
  • Henry is funny. He LOVES to laugh. He loves to joke. He loves to be social. He honestly is just such a love. And, from about 18-20 months until now have just been amazing. He’s SO fun and so sweet and just such a cutie pie. He loves to hold hands and play. He loves to spend time together. He’s just a buddy.
    20180512_102658.jpg
  • Henry is in a silly phase where he constantly has to tell people, “no, that’s MY MOMMY!”… says it to Charlotte, my parents, random people… I probably shouldn’t laugh, but I like that he gets defensive over me. I’m sure one day he’ll be trying to trade me in for a cooler version, so I’ll take the silly affection now.
  • Henry is a master stacker. He loves to build a big tower and then knock it over. He actually has great precision and can build a pretty high tower.
  • He LOVES outside. Playing outside, looking outside, etc. The boy is most definitely an outdoor boy.
  • Henry continues to love music. He starts dancing and screams out that he loves this song whenever he hears music in a store. He’s constantly singing, tapping, bobbing his head and shaking those adorable little shoulders.
    20180526_132432-ANIMATION
  • Henry is a MASTER eater. He just goes and goes and goes. His favorites are meat, cheese, berries, mango, pizza, toast… hmmm. Honestly, he’s not picky (as long as it isn’t green – grrrrr). The other day he ate 4 scrambled eggs, a piece of toast and some cereal for breakfast. He asked for more, but momma decided to cut him off.
    20180602_182229
  • Henry’s poop saga has continued. He has terrible blow out poops that would literally blow your mind. I’ve seen many a stomach turn and jaw to drop in reaction to Henry’s pooping wizardry. We think it might be a dairy allergy and are working on it.
  • When Henry snuggles, he puts his little head on my (or whoever’s shoulder), sticks his butt in the air and wraps his tiny paws around my shoulders. I melt… every time.
  • Henry is the ultimate buddy. Like, that’s just the best way to describe him. SUCH a lovey buddy.
  • Henry continues to be the noisiest human ever. His voice is just so loud. People know when Henry is around.
    20180603_102319-ANIMATION
  • Henry loves to play in the sand. Mommy hates sand.

We had an amazing day celebrating Henry’s GOLDEN birthday this past weekend…

We woke up to streamers & balloons…

20180602_072206

We ate funfetti waffles…

20180602_083757

We opened presents (C gave Hemy a tool bench that she “paid for”… aka she earned the money to buy it by vacuuming the whole house!… She also gave him about 6 pieces of her own clothing… for when he’s bigger, of course).

We went to a little petting farm with Nan…

We had a picnic in the kitchen…

We spoke to family & played…

20180602_183609.jpg

All in all, it was a wonderful day celebrating a wonderful human. We can’t wait for his big fire station birthday party on Saturday!

Happy birthday, sweet golden boy. I love you beyond words. Thanks for being my Hem.

Henry @ 21 Months

Henry

  • It might be possible that I have two of the chattiest children around. Which, really, is no surprise. I think my most frequently received comment on my report cards as a kid was, “talks to much in class.” Something to look forward to.
  • Hemy Hem is stringing together 4-word sentences pretty regularly. In fact, he had one this morning that was so good, I even repeated it to Mark, but of course, I’ve since forgotten. His list of words is literally unreal. He’s a total parrot, so if you say it, so does he. But he’s also comprehending, as his vocab explodes daily.
  • This kid is literally talking from the moment he wakes up until the moment he goes to sleep… and actually, sometimes in between. It is not uncommon to be woken up by random Henry chats. He’ll share a few thoughts, roll over and it’s back to sleep.
  • While it’s totally sassy, I just love the way he says, “no mommmmmy.” He gets this little troublemaker smirk on his face. It’s pretty cute.
  • Another of my faves is “I’m excited!!!!” – he says this with SUCH squeals and excitement! It’s just hilarious.
  • Oh! “In a minute”… this one was cute, but is a little more maddening these days. Henry will be walking away from me. I’ll call his name and he’ll turn around, walk back to me and say, “In a minute” with his little finger in the air to signify “one minute.”
  • Boy’s got sass. But he’s SOOO sweet. “Momma, hac”… aka hug. He’s always opening his little arms for a hug and giving me back taps and smooches. He totally knows how to work his mom.
  • He’s learning to count! He’s got 1, 5, and 10 solidly. The other numbers tend to all sound a little like 2.
  • He sings his abc’s… “abcdefg da da da da da da”
  • He’s FINALLY getting better at allowing us to brush his teeth. In fact, this morning his “eee’s” and “ahhh’s” were sounding like little monster growls.
  • The kid LOVES food. He’s the hangriest little food monster. He must be fed. If someone else is eating, he must “try it” (another of his coined phrases).
  • He still loves his baby. But also gives baby a lot of shit. Baby gets the boot a lot during nap time.
  • Henry started school!!! Did I even post about that? What the heck! I need to do a separate school post, but he started Jan 24th I believe. He’s totally loving it. Picking him up from school is so funny. He squeals and shows me all his toys and friends. All the little people congregate around me. Sometimes I get hugs from random children. It’s glorious.
  • Henry takes 2 naps per day on non-school days and 1 nap on school days. Goes to bed around 6:30 pm, wakes up around 630/7.
  • Henry loves Elsa and Anna, but will pick watching Moana over any other show/movie 19/20 times.
  • Henry loves berries. Squeals for berries.
  • Henry calls grapes “bapes.”
  • Most who meet Henry are enamored. I’m totally biased, but the kid is cute. His personality is magical. He’s funny and engaging. He blows kisses, but usually without the hand motion, so it’s just a lot of lip smacking puckers.
  • Henry is smart. I know that sounds like a mom thing to say, but legit. He’s smart. He makes associations between people (if I say one person, he’ll say their spouse… even if it’s not people we see that often). He has a great memory. Great comprehension.

Henry Update

Can we just talk about what a little champ my guy is? SUCH. A. CHAMP.

Henry went in for orchiopexy surgery last Tuesday morning at 8am. Despite not eating anything since dinner, the bugger was a champ. In fact, I think he was actually having a pretty great time for a while there.

That is, until they put the hospital bracelet around his ankle. Let’s just say, Hem was NOT a fan. This is not even a little surprising, though, as he can’t handle a collar touching his neck or any weird laying clothing.

IMG_9334

Get this bracelet OFF!!

Shortly after the ankle bracelet, Henry was given an oral medication to calm him and get him all zonked before anesthesia. It worked. He was SO loopy and heavy-headed. He laid on mommy, with stickers in one hand and daddy’s phone playing “Let it Go” (on repeat) in the other hand. Every so often, he’d lift one of his hands to rediscover what he was holding, as if he had no idea.

During this time, the surgeon came in to chat with us and then the anesthesiologist. If I’m being totally honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the anesthesiologist’s bedside manner. He seemed like a very nice person, but just seemed to approach all discussion topics with a sense of drama-building urgency. I asked if he would have a pain block of some sort and he explained that sometimes they give a baby epidural. Clearly, my face grew panicky because he confirmed whether this was something we were comfortable with. Mark and I both agreed that we wanted him to do what was necessary to keep Henry comfortable.

Then, they carried Henry away. While I didn’t cry, I did spiral into a deep, internal panic. On the outside, I was pretty silent, except to mention hear or there how I thought I might throw up.

The doctor and nurses had told us the procedure would take about an hour. At the hour and 10ish minute mark, the Surgery Waiting Room Receptionist came running towards us with a cell phone. She handed me the phone. It was the anesthesiologist. I panicked. “Is everything okay?!?!?” He nonchalantly said, “oh, yeah. The doctor discovered hernias, so he has to make more incisions (4 total). I’d like to give Henry the epidural, but wanted to check with you because you seemed unsure.” Me: “If that’s what he needs, yes. Please give him the epidural.”

In my head: WTF, DUDE? You scared the crap out of me with this running cell phone nonsense! I told you to do what was best for my child!!!!

The surgery lasted about another hour when finally the surgeon came out to tell us that everything had been resolved. They had also tested Henry’s pee stream and ended up having to make a 2mm cut to his urethra, in addition to the removal of circumcision adhesions.

All in all, the buddy was pretty roughed up down there.

When Henry finally woke up, they said he lifted his IV’d arm slowly, looked at them, and called out for mommy. Of course, the second he saw me, he started to cry. I scooped him up and didn’t let go until we left the hospital around 2:30.

When we got home, the most difficult thing right away was trying to wrangle him. Because of the epidural, he didn’t have full control of his jello legs, so he was flopping all over the place… but of course, he didn’t want help walking. After his nap, he was back to his old tricks.

With that said, he was medicated with an alternating cocktail of oxycodone (only at night for the first 2 nights), ibuprofen and tylenol. By Sunday he was totally off the meds (so 5 days total).

Truly, the worst part was diaper changes. I guess that’s obvious. But, oofta. Mark worked from home the day after the surgery, which was nice… but of course, it wasn’t until 2 days after – when mommy was alone – that he really let those poops go. Oy!

Thankfully, he is getting better every moment and will be back at school tomorrow! PHEW! What a whirlwind.

Buddy

Hem Jan 2018 3

My little buddy boy is having surgery tomorrow. It’s routine, but long, and requires general anesthesia. We’ve known about this procedure for awhile now, which clearly means that I have almost successfully been ignoring the impending date for months. With only hours left and pre-op prep beginning after nap, I’m anxious.

Hem Jan 2018I’m sure I’ve mentioned it – as if one wouldn’t guess it – but I’m an anxious person on a good day. Since having babies, said anxiety has hit borderline crazy person levels. So, I’m sure you can imagine the endless worry cycling through my mind. I keep wanting to tell myself, “you know that everything will be okay!” but do I? That’s where my head is at.

Hem Jan 2018 2

I would say that 100% my biggest anxiety is in the anesthesia. I just want everything to go smoothly. Things will be okay. Little buddy, my sweet love, will be okay and this time tomorrow, we will hopefully be on our way back home. Easy peasy. Done and done.

Hem Jan 2018 4

Still, I’m walking around as if constantly on the verge of panic or an emotional breakdown. Tight, tight chest. Totally useless mind. Constantly fidgeting body. Fighting tears. The good stuff. And, somehow it’s only 2pm.

Hem Dec 2017

If you’re in my inner circle, I love you, but don’t want to discuss aforementioned crazy thoughts. Just need to get a little weight off my heavy chest. And, rest assured, if Henry wakes early from his nap, he and I will be leaving work to get a yummy treat for him and a little retail therapy in for me.

Wish us luck, send us strength and keep us in your hearts. Thanks, all.

Their Love

“When I grow up, I will marry my brudder, Hemy!” C has been proclaiming lately. I don’t have the heart (or see the need) to explain why that is just not going to happen… but the meaning behind it is so sweet.

Charlotte loves her brother. She trusts her brother. She finds comfort in her brother.

Charlie wants to “marry” her brother because they “wuv eachovers” 💕

These two little people are amazing apart and amazing together. It makes my heart absolutely melt and flutter and all the cliche shit. But it’s true. They love eachovers and that is the most beautiful thing in the world.
