Sleep Training Follow Up

URGH! I just finished this post and accidentally deleted it. Hate when that happens… so, I apologize in advance if this post sucks. The first one was nice and detailed…

Anyway, about three weeks ago, we entered a new phase of sleep training: The cry-it-out-in-the-middle-of-the-night phase. We were inspired to give this a whirl after meeting with our pediatrician at Charlotte’s 4-month check up. At the appointment, she informed us that at 5 months, there was absolutely no reason why Charlotte would NEED to be eating in the middle of the night and that she was perfectly capable of sleeping through the night.

Music to our ears.

From about 3.5-5 months, Charlotte was waking up twice a night (sometimes 3 times, sometimes once). While some parents don’t mind waking up and comforting their babes at 3 am, we just aren’t those people. It was totally fine when she needed to eat, but once given the okay, we were ready to let her figure it out.

So, that’s what we did! As I explained in this post, the first couple of days were a little rough, but really, not even that bad. She fussed and cried for an hour and ended up putting herself back to sleep. After those first few nights, she just got progressively better and better. Most nights, she would wake up somewhere between 10 and 12 and 1 and 4 for anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes. After 2 weeks, it was only once a night and now, we rarely hear her at all and when we do, it’s just a subtle little noise and she’s transitioning into the next sleep cycle.

I’m not going to lie, it’s amazing.

Here’s a little snapshot of Charlotte’s sleep over the past week and month from my sleep tracking app. I don’t think the app is the best, but it works. Also, I’d recommend tracking sleep. It really helps you stay on top of baby’s routine and needs.

Last 30 Days

Last 7 Days

Over the past 6ish months, we have worked really hard to sleep train this little being. Whether it was at 2 months when I literally stayed home for three weeks straight to make sure Charlotte was napping every 1-2 hours in her crib, or the MANY nights and naptimes that left me covered in stress hives brought on by the screams and howls of our baby, we made sleep a priority. Now of course, we can’t take all (or likely even the majority) of the credit. Charlotte is a good sleeper and has a very independent side. I am positive that plays a role in this journey.

But, regardless, we are so proud of our little sleeper. Charlotte goes to bed every night between 5 and 7 – most often around 6p. She sleeps 12 hours THROUGH THE NIGHT. And even better, she’s an expert napper. She has finally consolidated her countless 40 minutes naps into some really nice long naps. In fact, over the past few days, she’s been taking 2 naps and sleeping 4-5 hours total during that time. It’s really awesome.

And it’s not just crib sleep, our little bunny can sleep in any pack n’ play or on any blanket (well, not anymore since she’s a rolling, scooting machine), as long as it’s in a dark room. It’s so convenient.

Way to go, Charlie!! Mommy and Daddy appreciate it. Now, if we could only get our bums in bed earlier, we might actually feel rested.

Also, I know I’ve mentioned the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby before, but I want to mention again that this is the book we use to guide us in our sleep training journey. I really recommend it. It didn’t always have the answers we were looking for, but it seemed to keep us focused.

24 Weeks of Yumminess

I cannot believe my little lovie is already 24 weeks old. Time is literally flying by. This week has been a big one for Charlotte. She’s really seeming to make some big leaps developmentally. She seems way more aware of what’s going on around her and seems to do things in a much more deliberate way.

Whether it’s grabbing at items, or noticing when mommy or daddy leaves the room, or looking around objects to find something… she’s definitely just different this week.

Despite her major crabbiness the past couple days, she’s still just as delicious and lovable as always. Truly a little joy.

This week also marked Charlotte’s second year she’s been alive to witness! Such a big girl.

One Step Closer to Crawling

The tiny one has been in SUCH a mood. She’s been making this nonstop whining noise. This sounds horrible to say out loud, but it’s been suuuper annoying. Sorry, Charlie. I love you, but you’ve been a little annoying these past couple of days. Anyway, yesterday she took a much welcomed break from spazing to share SUCH a precious little moment with her dad and I.

She woke up early from a nap and still seemed tired (and cranky)… so, I gave her a toy and put her back in her crib. She played in there, squeaking about, for almost an hour until she started fussing to get out.

Mark and I went into her room to discover her popped up in crawling position. I’m so grateful that Mark immediately grabbed his camera and caught this adorable little gem on tape. Not to mention the excitement and craziness that is this little woman! She gave us SUCH a great laugh and is well on her way to figuring out the magic of crawling.

Enjoy!

HAPPY New Year!!

Had a great night with my family! We let Charlie have her first 3 minutes of actual screen time tonight with this little New Year’s Eve countdown for kids that Netflix had. Yes, she’s seen the TV during football games, but we always try to block or distract her.

Not gonna lie… She loved it. Sorry, Charlie! That’s all till next New Year’s Eve!

After the weird little cartoon creature counted down, we gave Charlie her new year’s smooches (at 630pm) and it was time for bed!

Total Elimination Diet (TED)

The poop saga continues. Last time I posted, I was struggling to figure out how to solve sweet Charlotte’s green, mucousy blood poops.

Since then – just under two weeks ago – I have been on Dr. Sears’ Total Elimination Diet. The diet consists of literally turkey (range-fed), yellow squash, zucchini, pear, sweet potato, olive oil, salt/pepper and rice. That’s it! However, as of a week ago, I eliminated rice, as it seemed to be bothering Charlotte. So now, I’m surviving on turkey, sweet potato, pear, and squash/zucchini.

The point of the diet is to totally strip down your intake to make it easier to identify what is bothering her tummy. Once her poop has become regular, the idea is to add in one food every 4-5 days and track what is okay and what bothers her.

BUT, of course, it’s not so simple. I was on the diet for a week with no real change, so I did end up putting Charlotte on prescription formula (neocate) for a little over 2 full days. Once on the formula, Charlotte’s poop FINALLY became regular. It was yellow, no mucous and no blood.

On that third day – after 1.5 weeks of clean TED eating – I went back to breastfeeding. However, 2.5-3 hours after nursing her for the first time since formula, she had bloody mucous.

Her poop since then has been really pretty varied. Diarrhea this morning, yellowish green, yellowish brown, mucousy, no mucous. Jury is still out I guess.

I’ve spoken with two lactation consultants, multiple people from La Leche League, and women from my mom’s group… Consensus? Nobody has any real idea.

It could be an allergy, it could be an over supply… Or maybe she just has an intolerance to my milk in general?? I don’t know.

Most people say that if it doesn’t seem to bother her, just keep breastfeeding. Although they aren’t sure if that has any long term effects.

Unfortunately, that’s not really settling our minds. So, we scheduled an appointment to see a pediatric GI specialist in two weeks… And until then, I will continue to choke down sweet potatoes three times a day.

I’ve been trying to spice things up in terms of meals, but it tends to be quite similar day to day.

Breakfast:
Sweet potato/zucchini hash browns and/or turkey & pear sausage (aka cut up pear cooked in a mini homemade turkey burger)
/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/da2/59431483/files/2014/12/img_1184.jpg

Lunch:
Turkey breast (cooked in olive oil and water in the slow cooker) with zucchini/pear slaw (aka chopped zucchini and pear) on sweet potato peels (I microwave a sweet potato, scoop out the insides, and use the skin as bread)

Dinner:
Homemade turkey burger with shredded zucchini and/or squash in it with either zucchini hash on top or zucchini slaw and sweet potato dipping sauce (aka puréed sweet potato, water and salt), sweet potato crisps (chopped sweet potatoes tossed in olive oil and salt and cooked at 450 until crispy), and sautéed squash

Our (Past Due) Thanksgiving Weekend

I know, I know… This is literally my 5th post today. Can you tell I’m trying to get caught up?

Well, we had such a great Thanksgiving with our sweet baby and have so much to be thankful for, I just had to dedicate a post…

We saw old friends, all the grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins… Charlie got to dig into some Thanksgiving sweet potatoes… I got tons of baby snuggles… Toby went on a puppy date… We even got to see great grandpas! It was perfection.

22 Week Update

Sweet little Charlie had her first Christmakkuh party this week! This is an annual tradition we have with friends. Our friends have an adorable little 18 month old and it seems that Charlotte is finally at an age where she can appreciate their little girl, Madison. She was smiling at Maddie, reaching out to her and just all around loving on her…

Even better, Charlotte was SO good with our friends (let them hold her without crying and all that good stuff). THEN, she went right to sleep in a pack and play in their guest bedroom and let mom and dad enjoy a night out. So fun!

Charlotte also had her first Chanukah celebration with her cousins! I decided to start a new holiday tradition… MATCHING JAMMIES for the cousins!!! YES! I am that person. I searched forever to find inexpensive matching jammies in boys, toddler and infant… and finally, found some cute penguin jammies made by Carters. Only $12ish each!

Check out the cuteness…

I think I’ll have to do a separate post with the rest of these cutie pie pics!

And now, here are Charlotte’s 22 Week photos…

Yeee Haw… 23 Weeks of Fun!

I still need to put up Charlotte’s 22-week photos, but while my memory is still fresh, I’ll focus on this past week. Little Charlie girl is getting big. It’s crazy how fast time is flying.

This week, she’s really been working hard to get moving. In fact, check out her attempt to inch worm!!

She’s such a little love and soon, she’s going to be on the move. We had her on the carpet the other night and she literally rolled herself across the room. This girl’s gotta go!

She also celebrated her first Chanukah this week. I know I mentioned this before, but the little one loves wrapping paper. Here she is opening her presie from Nana…

And here are her pics from this week… please excuse her silly outfit. I was feeling a little “hipster meets cowgirl.”
