37 Weeks, 3 Days & My OB Check

How far along: 37 Weeks, 3 Days! Holy crap. I’m about 2.5 weeks from my due date. How is that even possible? I know I say this every SINGLE week, but time is seriously flying.

Taken on 4/29/16

Total weight gain: Weight gain is 3 lbs since my last appointment (2 weeks ago). Being that I had just eaten my delicious egg burrito breakfast, I’m okay with that. Total is 32lbs. Can I stay below 40?? Time will tell 🙂

Hopefully at minimum, I can stay below the 55+ I gained with Charlotte.

Maternity clothes: I’m rocking nothing but… but super excited to switch to my normal clothes! And thankful I’ve really only needed one season of clothing (cold weather).

Stretch marks: Way to go, skin! Still no stretchies!

Sleep: Sleep isn’t my strongest skill these days. My hips and my back and my shoulder get so damn sore. But it’s not terrible. With some solid tossing and turning, I still manage to sleep until about 615/630 every morning.

Best moment of this week: Be grateful that I waited until today to write this update. I was a bit cranky this week. BUT, now I’m back to happy so I can answer this question.

Highlights include more progress on the nursery…

Another Charlie poop on the potty! And also 4 farts! Yes, we had to strip down 4 individual times so the tiny gf could fart. She was proud.

More family time with the cousins!

And oy! Charlie’s first baseball game. It was SO much fun. She was just so incredibly happy. Nothing makes me happier.

Miss anything: Don’t judge, but yesterday morning, I woke up thinking about white sangria… at 630 am. How tasty does that sound?

Movement: The tiny man is such a mover and a shaker. I can’t even believe he’s going to be here soon. I haven’t spent a lot of time envisioning his tiny face, but I’m starting to. I see a mini Mark in my head.

Oy! I just want to squeeze him and smother him with kisses.

Food cravings: I ate so much at the game yesterday. I’m in “eat it while you’re still giant and getting more giant” mode. I had a hot dog, cheese curds and a giant soft pretzel. Whatever.

My point is that there isn’t much to crave when you’re eating everything.

Anything making you queasy or sick: My chiropractor actually helped a lot with my acid reflux. It’s definitely much more manageable since I went. But my back and hips. Oofta. They are having a hard time supporting the GIANT belly I’m rocking.

Have you started to show yet: Yesterday at the game, I was walking back to my seat and as I slipped into our row, my belly knocked the dude’s head in front of me… while I was carrying a giant soft pretzel dripping in butter.

I just shrugged.

Gender: Mister man.

Labor signs: I feel like my BHs contractions have slowed down. Speed up, contractions! Time to get ready for the show!

Belly button in or out: I laugh every time I see my belly button in the mirror.

Wedding rings on or off: Still on! Last night they were really tight, but back to being okay today.

Happy or moody most of the time: I am not going to lie… I’ve cried probably 5-6 times this past week and have found myself in an enraged state at least 4-5 times. So, I guess moody would be the overwhelming mood. BUT, today I feel happy and positive and good.

Looking forward to: I’ve got a lot of little things I’m looking forward to…

  1. Making more progress in the nursery! I just want everything hung up already.
  2. Checking more household tasks off the list and packing my damn hospital bag.
  3. We’re meeting with our doula tonight, which I’m excited about.
  4. Nice weather that’s in the forecast.
  5. We’re having dinner with friends (and their kiddies) on Friday!
  6. Mother’s Day is THIS Sunday! We are hosting brunch for the fam, which I’m excited about. I’m thinking of doing waffles again. Who doesn’t love a waffle bar?

OB CHECK UPDATE

Weight Gain: 3 lbs from last visit, 32 total

Heart Rate: 88 bpm (high, but way better than the 96 I was sitting at)

BP: 110/66

Baby’s Heart Rate: BOO! I forgot to ask, but she said it sounded perfect.

Baby Bump: Measuring between 37 and 38 cm, which she said likely means baby hasn’t dropped yet. However, she said that’s very common for second pregnancies. Many women don’t drop until they’re actually in labor or even right before they’re about to push. So no worries.

Other: I had my Strep B test today. Hopefully we’ll get some good news there (with a negative result). Also, I stayed strong and didn’t do the cervical check, which I feel good about. It really is such an insignificant test that literally makes you feel like shit or gets your hopes up without any validity.

On my way to the doc, I called my doula to keep me focused. Of course, I’m human and I want to read into something, so I started second guessing whether I should skip the cervical check or not. After speaking with her, I was really set in my decision. It helped me remember leaving the doctor’s office in tears last pregnancy when my cervix hadn’t changed. At this point, there is no need to read into anything. I just have to keep on going and just trust my body and see what happens!

31 Weeks Here! Single Digits Left…

How far along: 31 Weeks!! Holy crap guys. Remember when I was going to post weekly bumpdates? Oops. Things got a little busy these past couple of weeks, but here’s one… and right on time!

Also, only 9 weeks till the big due date. That’s pretty crazy, huh? Especially since time is literally just flying by. This little nugget will be here before I know it!

Total weight gain: I have an appointment with my OB on Monday, so the answer to this one will have to wait. How do I feel? Like I wish someone could walk around with me holding up my belly. That would help.

But really, I definitely don’t feel as pregnant as I look in photos. Every so often I see a photo or a mirror glance at a weird angle and I’m totally thrown off. Holy hell! Who is that?

I don’t recognize myself.

But that’s okay! The positive is that this baby is such a wiggler… makes me feel like we’re “spending time together.”

Maternity clothes: I bought a couple new shirts and a pair of faux leather leggings. Clearly a maternity must-have. I haven’t worn them yet, but maybe this weekend.

Stretch marks: Still going strong with no stretchies.

Sleep: Sleep has been on and off. Last night was an off night. Definitely could have done without my bout of insomnia from 3-5… but what can you do?

Best moment of this week: Well, these past few weekends have been great! I’ll post more about those in a separate post, but it’s been a happy week. Charlie turned 20 months, Mark and I celebrated 3 years… all good stuff!

Miss anything: Putting my socks on with ease.

Movement: The other night during our parenting class, my back was killing me. To get a little relief, I put my hands under my belly and essentially held it up with my hands. Apparently, the lift caused the little man to require a readjustment because he instantly made a huge movement. The cool part is that he moved in a way that it literally felt like he was in my hands… like I was holding him. I spent the rest of class trying to replicate the experience with no luck.

Food cravings: Nothing too crazy these days.

Anything making you queasy or sick: My toddler… but I don’t think that’s what this question is referring to. But dang it… C and I are cold-ridden again.

Have you started to show yet: Big ass belly.

Gender: A Mister.

Labor signs: Just the run-of-the-mill Braxton Hicks.

Belly button in or out: It’s a very strange crater-like inny outty. Don’t ask…

Wedding rings on or off: On!

Happy or moody most of the time: I’ve been good these past few weeks! We’ve had a lot of fun.

Looking forward to: We are celebrating our anniversary this weekend! Hot date with my hubs at a fancy shmance restaurant… what could be bad? Also looking forward to my OB appointment. I don’t know why, but I am. Hmmm. I am hoping to schedule a hair appointment, so that’s exciting, too! All good things.

Babies GALORE

To say that I’m surrounded by babies would be an understatement. If we’re just talking “Facebook Friends” I could literally say that I know someone who births a baby every single day. Maybe not really, but it’s close.

I am 100% surrounded by people with babies under 6 months old or who are pregnant. And, it’s amazing! I absolutely love it.

Just this week… yes, it’s only Tuesday, two of my good friends just had babies. One yesterday morning and one this morning. Can you believe it?

Even better, both of these girls delivered vaginally! GO MOMMA POWER!

And actually, another girl from my high school just had a successful VBAC. I think it was yesterday? I emailed her and asked her to chat when things settle down and already heard back.

Besides all those babies, three of my other besties have babes 6 months or under (and another friend with a babe who’s 8 months). Then I have two friends due next month and my Seattle bestie and another friend who was pregnant with me last time due within weeks of my due date.

That makes it seem like I have tons of friends.

I don’t.

I have literally just accounted for all of my friends. SO. MANY. BABIES.

I absolutely love it. Seeing all of these tiny babies is getting me pretty excited for our little bundle. Such happy times.

20 Week Check Up

Today marks Week 20, Day 4 of my pregnancy! Wahoo! Over halfway through. To date, my OB Checks have been pretty quick and harmless.

Here are my stats from today:

Weight: Up 9 lbs (total) – as an FYI, I started at the exact weight I had measured in at with Charlotte and have gained less. Last time, I had gained 10 lbs at 19 weeks. This mom bod just aint the same as it used to be.

BP: 100 something/54 ? Ugh I don’t know. I wasn’t paying attention.

Pulse: 88 bpm

Fetal Heart Rate: PERFECT! I forgot to ask the actual rate, but it sounded great and little boo decided to play. He pushed and pushed and pushed that little doppler until finally he gave up and switched positions. Apparently he was not in the mood to be bothered.

I also decided to ask a few questions this time… and to preface, I should mention that I had a c-section the first time after 20 some hours of labor (Here’s our labor story and our delivery story). The c-section didn’t go perfectly because our little Charlie got stuck.

Needless to say, while I will be allowed to try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section), there are some stipulations. Today I asked about those stipulations:

Question 1: How long will I be able to stay pregnant before having to schedule a c-section?

Answer 1: My doctor will not induce me, as she does not deem it safe for my VBAC attempt. However, she will let me go just a couple of days past my due date in hopes that I go into labor naturally.

Question 2: IF I have to have a planned c-section, can baby be put on me immediately for skin-to-skin?

Answer 2: I’ve worked with the nurses to come up with a plan that works for our moms and babies and the nurses. I will hand the baby immediately to the nurses who will check them VERY briefly (less than one minute) and put them on mom’s chest. All testing (APGAR), baths, etc will happen later.

Question 3: If I have to have a c-section, will you still do the prolonged cord cutting?

Answer 3: I will typically wait a minute, but don’t feel comfortable waiting any longer, as the mom is still open and bleeding from the edges.

The 3am News

9/12/15

On Wednesday, September 9th at 3 am, we got news that will forever change our lives, hearts, and future. Our little Charlie is gaining a sibling 🙂

Now, it might seem weird that the news came at 3am… and that’s because it is weird. I had been feeling sick for a week, so I decided to buy some pregnancy tests. I planned to wait until Thursday, which was the day I was expecting my period… BUT, for those of you who remember the last time (when I took 10 pregnancy tests before testing positive), I have an issue with patience.

Anyway, I woke up at 3 am to pee (I will discuss this and other pre-pregnancy symptoms in another post), and decided… why not test now? I mean… it’s the good morning pee. I didn’t want to waste it.

So, I quietly unwrapped the test, did my thing and waited. I walked back and forth from one side of the bathroom to the other. Finally, I let my eyes reach the test: Pregnant. I can’t explain the feeling in one word. At first it was like, “duh”… I knew I was. And then came the “holy crap!” factor… not scared, but kind of “here we go again!” And of course excitement! So much excitement that I was awake for the next 2.5 hours googling, downloading baby apps, and trying to distract myself.

I duplicated my message to hubs from last time, but instead of putting the announcement sign near the toilet (which didn’t work as planned last time), I put it near the toothbrushes. After reaching over the sign and pregnancy test three times, he finally saw the message and ran out of the bathroom with a full face of toothpaste and half screamed, “REALLY?!” with a big sudsy smile!

The sign when I told Hubs we were pregnant with Charlie:

amazing dad

The sign to announce our newest miracle:

We’re really happy and really lucky. We literally just started trying this month. Mark said I must have hungry eggs. haha Nice, huh?

We let Charlie break the news to the parents:

Practicing for Her New Role

Last night my Milly (Mother-in-Law) brought Charlie a wonderful and perfectly timed Chanukah gift: The Baby Amaze Learn to Talk & Read Doll

Charlotte absolutely adores her new Baby Amaze and spent the whole evening practicing for her new role as BIG SISTER beginning in May 2016!

Yes folks, you read that correctly!

Miss Charlotte will be welcoming a little brother or little sister into our family somewhere in the vicinity of May 20th.

Cheers for growing families! Wish us luck 🙂

My Newborn Must Haves

Since I’m definitely going to forget, I thought I’d take the time to blog about my favorite, must-have newborn items. As the days go on, I can see this list changing, but these are the things that totally saved me over the past three months.

1. The swing! OH magical swing. We received ours as a hand-me-down from my sister and this thing is a godsend. Judge away, but sometimes, I’ve gotta put baby girl down and get some stuff done. Not-to-mention the fact that she really loves hanging out in the swing. We put it near a window so she can look at the light or wherever really. It definitely calms her and me. This is an item she still loves (thankfully!!).

This isn't our exact swing, as ours is at least 5 years old, but it's Fisher-Price and looks pretty darn similar to this one.

2. The Maya Ring Sling. So, I was all about the baby wearing. It’s the perfect way to get babes to chill out and take a napski while mom finishes dinner. At first, I tried the Moby Wrap, but when your baby is howling and you’re trying to get dinner ready, there’s no time for fabric origami. I also tried the Ergo Baby with the infant insert, but a) that thing is so big and bulky, we’d both be sweating bullets and b) it was a whole ordeal to get her in the infant burrito insert, then in the carrier. Long story short, neither option was quick enough. Then came the maya ring sling, which my sister found for me at a garage sale (best $20 spent EVER). It was so simple to throw on and totally calmed the nugget. Whether I was making dinner, walking around the house, or enjoying a 3-4 hour bridal shower, this thing REALLY came in handy.

3. The Bob Motion Travel System. I really wanted a bugaboo stroller. Yes, I’m talking about that $1000+ piece of equipment. After a few (understatement of the year) arguments with my husband, I decided that it made more sense to spend $1,000 on a bazillion baby necessities than on a baby luxury. SO, I went to BuyBuy Baby and tested out all of the strollers. I fell in love with the BOB and have been so happy with it. It’s easy to use, so easy to maneuver and not too giant.

The BOB.

4. Aiden & Anais Swaddle Blankets. I use these things for everything (except swaddling). I have at least one in every room. They’re perfect for wiping up spit up or drool or milk if I decide to spray my babe in the face, they’re great to drape over the car seat to protect C from the sun, they’re a nice blanket to lay on or keep the little one warm. They’re the perfect all purpose blanket.

I probably have at least 12 of these.

I probably have at least 12 of these.

5. The Boppy Nursing Pillow. The Boppy was such a godsend in the first couple months. For the bazillion hours spent nursing, it was perfect to prop baby up on. Not to mention the fact that I was so dang nervous with her in the beginning. The Boppy made me feel like my fragile little nuglet was safe and supported without giving me a total dead arm. Now that I’m working with Charlotte, the Boppy is once again one of my “must haves.” It allows me to work while she eats… And when she’s not using it, it’s super comfortable as a back rest.

Tiny babes sleeping on the boppy after a good snack.

6. Trail mix and my giant water bottle (with a straw). This is something I didn’t know would be so crucial. If you’re breastfeeding, those first few weeks bring a hunger and thirst like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I’m talking about a lightheaded, dizzy hunger. Your body is working hard and with all the baby care, it’s not always easy to go make a snack. I kept trail mix next to my bed, in the nursery, in my purse, in the diaper bag. Any place I might suddenly be attacked with a surge of hunger.

7. My nursing cover. Mine was the bebe au lait, which I thought worked very well. This thing allowed me to leave the house and provide 24/7 flood service to my babe. In not going to like though, I really do not enjoy breastfeeding in public.

8.HALO Sleepsack Swaddle. Our hospital gave us this as a little gift, and we really loved it. Not to mention, the little one loved it. And she was such a cute little burrito in it. We had a Summer Infant one and it SUCKED… velcro never stayed together and got caught on everything… and an Aden + Anais one, which we returned because it had snaps instead of velcro… that makes no sense at all.

Tiny person in the Halo sleep sack swaddle thing.

Tiny person in the Halo sleep sack swaddle thing.

9. Comfy yoga or maternity pants, hospital undies, nursing tops or stretchy tanks, and button downs / cardigans. This was so important. I had a c-section, so any low or even normal rise anything (underwear or pants) were an absolute no way. I literally took about 30 pairs of the free hospital undies they give you. They’re really not that bad… except they look like a diaper. But man were they crucial for avoiding the scar. Same story with the pants. As for the tanks, I lived in nursing tanks for a month, but then I started feeling more confident and was able to just wear nursing friendly shirts… mainly, stretchy tanks with a cardigan or button down over it.

10. My husband. Holy crap, I would not have survived without him. Beyond just those first couple weeks where everything hurt and I needed help lifting her, etc. But just everything. I mean, I literally did not change a single diaper… not a one… for just about 2 weeks. That’s at least 140 diapers, people. And he’s still just so amazing and helpful and hands-on. He takes her in the mornings, we switch off night feedings, he does research when I’m so tired I can’t think straight, he still changes diapers without complaint, he takes her on walks, he listens to me gush about her every night and watches every single video I take of her. Best of all, he loves her to pieces.

Another Busy Weekend… This Time at 9.5 Months Pregnant

As with most of our weekends, it was another busy one! Lots of running from one activity to the next. So, here’s our weekend through a series of photos.

Classic & Oreo Mini Cheesecake Bake-Off

I decided that instead of making mini pies to bribe my doctor into writing me a note recommending a 12-week maternity leave, I would make mini original and oreo cheesecakes. The recipes were quite simple, but between making tonight’s dinner and prepping tomorrow’s slow-cooker dinner in between my cheesecake bake-off, I was literally in the kitchen for nearly 5 hours.

However, if I get that note, it will be worth every minute spent. If I don’t… I’m coming home and eating all the “leftover” cheesecakes.

All packaged up for my doc! Hope she likes cheesecake…

For both cheesecakes, I used a pretty classic recipe. The only difference between the classic and oreo was literally the crushed oreos mixed into the cheesecake batter. Here are the recipes:

Graham Cracker Crust:

1 cup graham cracker crumbles

2 TBSP sugar

3 TBSP butter, melted

*Mix it all together and voila! Then press graham cracker crust into paper-lined mini muffin tin.

Oreo Cookie Crust:

10 original Oreo Cookies with cream (not double stuffed)

1 TBSP butter

*Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Throw cookies in the food processor and grind up to crumbs. Add butter and grind again until crumbs. Press into paper-lined mini muffin tins and bake for 5 minutes.

Cheesecake Filling

3/4 cup sugar

3 (8oz) Packages Cream Cheese, softened

1 tsp Vanilla

3 Eggs

* Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

Beat cream cheese, vanilla and sugar with mixer until blended. Then add eggs one at a time, mixing on low speed after each just until well blended. IF YOU ARE MAKING OREO CHEESECAKE: Mix in Oreo Cookies, just until blended. Spoon cheesecake over crusts.

Bake at 325 degrees F for 15-18 minutes. Let cool, then refrigerate for 2-4 hours. Once fully cooled, add the garnish of your choice and refrigerate for an additional 1-2 hours (at least) to set. TA DA!

The Babymoon / 1 Year Anniversary Celebration

We are officially back from our jaunt to Mexico… in fact, we’ve already gotten right back into nursery prep mode. Last night we picked up the crib, glider, and ottoman from Babies R Us and did all the caulking around the trim in the nursery. As my Milly (Mother-In-Law) says, 0 to 60 in no time 🙂

But, before I get too far ahead of myself, I have to say, we had a REALLY great trip. After the worst winter ever, it was so nice to feel warmth… and the sun. Oh did I miss the sun. However, I did get pretty damn fried the first day. I really think it has to be partly because of the pregnancy, because wow did I fry. To the point where I had to take extra strength tylenol just to be able to pee.

Beyond that, it was wonderful. We stayed at the Excellence Playa Mujeres and honestly, couldn’t have picked a better resort. We were worried about spring breakers debauchery run-off from Cancun, but didn’t have a single issue. We got a pool or beach lounger whenever we wanted one, the crowd was a lot of couples (due to the adults only status), and there were tons of activities.

We did trap shooting with an air-soft gun, an aloe vera class, played tennis (Mark only), took a yoga class (me only), saw tons of shows (even a Mexican version of Michael Jackson), and relaxed a plenty.

My first time shooting and I was a rockstar! 2 out of 3! Poor husband didn't hit anything :)

Symptoms

I just had my doctor’s appointment today, which went well. The doc was very surprised (and maybe a little pleased) that I didn’t really have many questions at all. Everything is looking good, although, I did gain a bit of weight this month. She said I needed to put on a little extra because I was low before… but I put on that little extra and then a little extra after that. The nurse said if I get back to my normal eating habits and workout regimen, things will likely even out. Nothing to worry about… but I will definitely not be indulging as I was. EXCEPT for our one-year anniversary cake that is being delivered tonight. SO excited. Our cake lady added the mini cake into our wedding cake package. She made the cutest little design… love birds with eggs in the nest.

Other than that, I’m feeling really great! Still have random aches and pains in the back and cramping in my hip, but nothing to complain about. Also, the little nuglette continues to practice her acrobatics in my belly. She is quite the wiggle worm. Oh I just love her. Can’t wait to meet her!! Only 3.5 months left!
